When discussing B12, one of the most important facts is that the body does not make or store it.  Consumption of animal-based foods and/or a supplement is necessary.

As the American diet worsens, the need for supplements increases.   Limited testing exists for this deficiency, and they often miss a correct result.

B12 deficiency symptoms range from weakness, numbness or tingling to vision loss and depression. B12 aids in the production of healthy red blood cells, which are vital to our health.  This article will highlight the most common symptoms.

Heart palpitations and shortness of breath

Seek medical help if either occurs. Heart palpitations are when your heart rate feels irregular without an increased activity level.  B12 deficiency may be the cause.  Always contact your doctor immediately when experience changes in your heart. Palpitations causes can range from mild to severe in nature.

Pale skin

When red blood cells are fragile, bilirubin pigment can break into them. Because of the yellow hue in the pigment, skin tone will show less of the pinkish coloring of healthy skin.

Nerve issues

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when there is damage to nerves.  You will experience numbness, tingling, limited ability to move and lack of sensation. The outer barrier of the nerve is the myelin sheath.  When that barrier isn’t healthy, the nerves will become damaged. Reduced vitamin B12 may cause the damage.  Early treatment is important to avoid permanent damage.

Vision loss from a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Vitamin B12 is important to the nervous system.  Optic (eye) neuropathy is damage caused to the optic nerve.  A study of vegans with limited sight showed that adding B12 improved their vision.

Smooth, burning or tingling tongue.

Glottis is when your tongue feels smooth instead of having the normal bumpy feeling.  A smooth tongue that is deeper red than usual is likely caused by a vitamin B12.

Weakness

Oxygen plays an enormous role in muscle health and energy level.  Vitamin B12 is essential in making red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body.  Low oxygen leads to a decrease in muscle strength and energy.

Depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions.

Various studies conducted look for a link between psychiatric disorders and B12. Nerve health is reliant on many factors, including B12.  Unhealthy nerves lead to declined physiatric health.  Consider working with a therapist and doctor while increasing your B12 consumption.

One patient study concluded, “This case report describes a previously healthy lady without past personal psychiatric history presenting with delirium secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency. It illustrates the importance of considering the possibility of vitamin B12 deficiency among patients with delirium and other psychiatric symptoms.”

Confusion

Put the milk in the cereal cabinet?  Can’t find the glasses on your face?  Confusion may also be a psychiatric condition related to vitamin B12 deficiency.  One study found that 28.6% of 280 patients in a psychiatric facility were B12 deficient. Constipation, diarrhea and gas/bloat.

These gastrointestinal symptoms may be the result of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 plays a role in the breakdown of protein, carbohydrates and fat. They could also result from other conditions, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.   Pernicious Anemia is the result fo extreme low levels of vitamin B12. Stomach bloating, nausea and heartburn may be the first indicators.

Now what?  Buy a high-quality supplement to take regularly. Ensure you consume a well-balanced diet.  Foods like trout, tuna, ham, beef, chicken, low-fat milk and fortified cereals are helpful.  If you suspect a deficiency, talk to your doctor and determine if you need testing.
